Yuliya slid down the steep banks of the little creek, enthusiasm seeping into her mind. Finally a part of the campus that was more like home. Ugh. She hated the buildings, they made her feel trapped, suffocated. Here she could feel the fresh air around her, the warming sunshine, see the green glow of leaves, see the sky, feel the wind…she could forget everything.
Apollo had gone down before her and was now nosing around in the water, probably making sure there wasn’t anything odd that would make it unsafe for his…most people would call Yuliya his “master,” but she told others that she was Apollo’s, and all of her other pets’ companion, she wasn’t in charge of them. Though she herself called them her guardians, and she was their student.
Now Luna came down right after her, followed by Streak, who landed on the opposite shore. Yuliya scratched the husky behind her ears and began with her work of having fun.
She picked up a stick and started prodding it in the water, tossing aside water and silt, looking for something interesting, and while she was doing that, she saw numerous dark smudges in the water. At first, they looked only like rocks, and then came the horrible thought that they were leaches. Then, looking at them closer, she thought they were tadpoles…except they were too slow. Finally, she dug a hand in and picked one up, and an instant smile came upon her face when she realized they were snails.
Minutes, maybe hours passed by as she played in the stream. It was probably a childlike thing to do, but where she came from, curiosity, especially about the natural world, was always encouraged. And anyway, why stop doing something when it was still fun?
The sun above was getting hot and Apollo and Luna had now many times dunked themselves so as to cool themselves off. September hadn’t quite worn away the summer’s heat. Yuliya felt like she was at home. The only thing missing was her horses.
